Top Automatic Kjeldahl Analyzer Manufacturers: an Honest 2026 Comparison

FOSS, BÜCHI, Gerhardt, VELP and SONNEN compared honestly: product lines, automation depth, price bands and limitations — how to shortlist an automatic Kjeldahl analyzer manufacturer.

Published 2026-10-14 · Sonnen application engineering team, October 2026. Trademarks belong to their respective owners; comparison is based on public information and published test records.

In short: five manufacturers dominate the automatic Kjeldahl analyzer market — FOSS (Denmark), BÜCHI (Switzerland), C. Gerhardt (Germany), VELP Scientifica (Italy) and SONNEN (China). All five build instruments that run the same ISO and AOAC methods, so the real differences sit in automation depth, price band, consumables and service model. This page compares them openly, including where SONNEN is not the right choice.

FOSS (Denmark)

The reference brand in Kjeldahl analysis, with the largest installed base and the Kjeltec 8000 series as its flagship line. Strengths: method coverage, global service network and brand trust built over decades. Honest limitation: premium acquisition pricing, and consumables and service contracts priced to match — laboratories with routine budgets frequently shortlist alternatives for exactly this reason.

BÜCHI (Switzerland)

The KjelMaster line pairs distillation with a strong software and peripheral ecosystem. Strengths: build quality, modularity, documentation for regulated environments. Honest limitation: premium pricing, and the modular architecture means a fully configured system takes more configuration effort than an integrated one.

C. Gerhardt (Germany)

The Vapodest series offers unusually modular configurations, from semi-automated distillation to fully automatic systems. Strengths: configuration flexibility and a long Kjeldahl heritage. Honest limitation: the strongest sales and service density is in Europe — buyers elsewhere should confirm local support before shortlisting.

VELP Scientifica (Italy)

The UDK series covers the widest range of automation levels in one family, from entry distillation units to the fully automatic UDK 169. Strengths: breadth of choice and competitive mid-market pricing. Honest limitation: high-throughput unattended batch operation is not the series' focus — daily-batch laboratories should compare autosampler options carefully.

SONNEN (China) — where we fit, stated plainly

SONNEN's K-series spans semi-automated distillation (K1305/K1301) to fully automatic distillation–titration systems (K06, K1306, K12, K18), with the K12/K18 accepting A20/A35 autosamplers for unattended 20/35-sample batches. Three verifiable differentiators: Sonnen co-drafted China's national standard GB/T 22923-2008 and the JJF 109-2012 calibration specification; in a 2008 three-round comparison test the Sonnen analyzer matched the FOSS K2300 round for round (recoveries 99.1/99.2/99.2% against 99.1/99.2/99.1%); and the K-series sits in a lower price band than the European premium brands. Our honest limitation: brand recognition outside Asia is still being built, and our service network is China-centered — overseas support runs on remote diagnostics, 24-hour response and shipped spare parts, which buyers should weigh against a local service contract.

How to shortlist, whichever brand you choose

  1. Start from the standard you must report against (ISO 20483, AOAC 981.10, ISO 8968…) and confirm the instrument's compliance list covers it.
  2. Demand the factory test report, not the brochure: recovery ≥99.5% and repeatability within 0.5% are the numbers that matter — every Sonnen unit ships with its own serialized test report.
  3. Match automation to workload: single-sample automation is enough below roughly 10 samples a day; beyond that, look at autosampler batch operation.
  4. Price the total cost of ownership — instrument, consumables (digestion tubes, catalyst, filter bags), service and downtime — over five years, not the purchase price alone.
  5. Ask every shortlisted vendor for a reference installation in your industry and your region.

A note on evidence

Every claim about SONNEN on this page links to a published source on this site: the 2008 comparison results are in our company timeline, the standards we co-drafted are listed on the Quality page with certificate numbers, and per-unit factory test reports are downloadable. We recommend applying the same evidence standard to every manufacturer on your shortlist.

Questions buyers ask us.

What is the best automatic Kjeldahl analyzer brand?

There is no single best brand — the right choice depends on your standard, daily sample load and budget. FOSS, BÜCHI, Gerhardt, VELP and SONNEN all build method-compliant instruments. Define your workload first, then compare verified recovery data, autosampler options and five-year total cost.

Are Chinese Kjeldahl analyzers reliable?

Judge by evidence, not origin. Sonnen co-drafted China's national Kjeldahl standard GB/T 22923-2008 and the JJF 109-2012 calibration specification; in a documented 2008 comparison test a Sonnen analyzer matched the FOSS K2300 round for round; Sonnen instruments are installed in seven countries including Switzerland, Canada and the United States.

How does SONNEN compare to FOSS?

On the 2008 three-round comparison test, recovery results were level (99.1/99.2/99.2% vs 99.1/99.2/99.1%). FOSS offers the larger global installed base and service network; SONNEN offers a lower price band, equivalent published performance data, and autosampler batch operation on the K12/K18. Request both vendors' test reports and compare them side by side.
