Nitrogen Determination in Manganese-Silicon Nitride Alloy

How a high-pressure digestion plus nitrogen-analyzer technique solved nitrogen determination in manganese-silicon nitride alloy — high-silicon, high-nitrogen samples with no reference material available.

Published 2024-04-29 · Translated from the Sonnen method archive (shengshck.net, April 2024).

Manganese-silicon nitride alloy plays an extremely important role in high-value steel grades such as high-nitrogen steels, special alloys and stainless steels: adding it to steel markedly improves material properties. Its analysis and testing, however, is a challenging task — especially against a background of no standard reference materials and no established analytical method to follow.

Facing this technical problem, the authors of the study designed and carried out a large number of careful experiments, and successfully overcame the key difficulties: the decomposition problems caused by the sample's high silicon and high nitrogen content, and the lack of a standard reference material for nitrogen analysis.

In the course of the experiments, the authors made full use of the high precision and high performance of the K1302 nitrogen analyzer produced by Shanghai Sonnen Automated Analysis Instrument Co., Ltd. Through the established high-pressure digestion plus nitrogen-analyzer technique, they determined the nitrogen content of manganese-silicon nitride alloy accurately. On the same instrument they went on to measure the nitrogen content of other similar alloy materials — ferrochrome nitride, vanadium-nitrogen alloy, manganese-nitrogen alloy, ferrosilicon nitride, silicon nitride and ferrotitanium nitride — with satisfactory test results in every case.

This work provides a reliable method for nitrogen analysis in manganese-silicon nitride alloy and other related alloys, and offers practical technical support for production in the industries concerned. It also opens a useful path for research and technical development in steel materials, and serves as a valuable reference for metallurgy, chemical engineering and related fields.
